Gas production & gas storage
The DBI Group develops and assesses solutions for the production, storage and use of energy carriers in the geological subsurface. The Gas Production & Gas Storage department focuses on underground gas storage, gas and oil reservoirs, hydrogen underground storage and deep geothermal energy.
Our services combine geological and technical investigations, laboratory analyses, 3D modelling, reservoir simulation and engineering. We support projects from exploration and site assessment through planning, construction and operation to decommissioning, repurposing or safe closure.
The department supports operators of underground storage facilities and reservoirs, energy companies and project developers in assessing and developing technically robust solutions.
Our key topics
Gas Production, Reservoirs & Underground Gas Storage
We provide support with the exploration, development and operational optimisation of gas and oil reservoirs, as well as the planning, construction, simulation and decommissioning of underground gas storage facilities. Our key areas include cavern and porous-media storage facilities, reservoir modelling, reservoir simulation and well integrity.
Hydrogen underground storage
The DBI Group investigates the storage of hydrogen in cavern and porous-media storage facilities. We provide support with the assessment of existing underground gas storage facilities, the determination of hydrogen tolerance levels, the development of conversion concepts and reservoir modelling for hydrogen storage facilities.
Deep geothermal energy
The DBI Group supports geothermal projects through geological site characterisation, 3D modelling and the simulation of reservoirs and wells. Our services range from potential and suitability assessments to the development of exploration and operating concepts.
Engineering & Consulting
The DBI Group addresses tasks throughout the entire life cycle of underground storage facilities, hydrocarbon reservoirs and geothermal reservoirs. Our experience includes aquifer and depleted-field storage facilities, caverns, gas and oil fields, sour gas fields and heavy-oil reservoirs.

Research & Development
The DBI Group combines fundamental and applied research with engineering services. Within the Gas Production & Gas Storage area of expertise, we investigate aspects including the behaviour of gases and fluids in geological reservoirs and the technical requirements for the safe operation of underground storage facilities.
- Suitability studies of reservoir fluids, reservoir rocks and caprocks for underground natural gas, hydrogen and CO2 storage
- Laboratory investigations and model calibration for multiphase flows involving gas, water, oil and CO2
- Investigations into the mixing of different gases, such as hydrogen and natural gas
- Development of thermodynamic and fluid-dynamic models for the underground storage of hydrogen and CO2
